Temp-to-Hire vs. Direct Placement: Which Hiring Model Fits Your Team?
When you partner with a staffing agency to fill a role, one of the first decisions is how you want to hire. The two models we use most, temp-to-hire and direct placement, both end with great people on your team, but they take different paths there and suit different situations. Understanding the trade-offs helps you pick the right one from the start.
What temp-to-hire looks like
In a temp-to-hire arrangement, the associate joins your team on our payroll for an evaluation period. You get to see their work, attendance, and cultural fit in the actual role before making a permanent commitment. If they are a match, you convert them to a permanent employee. If they are not, you simply end the assignment with far less friction than a permanent termination. It is the lower-risk path, and it shines when you are staffing high-volume light-industrial roles, ramping a new line, or hiring for a position where on-the-job fit is hard to judge from an interview alone.
What direct placement looks like
In a direct-placement search, we run the full recruiting process (sourcing, screening, and vetting) and deliver finalists for a role you hire permanently from day one. You pay a placement fee only when you make a successful hire. Direct placement is the right call for specialized, hard-to-fill, or leadership roles where the candidate pool is narrow, where you need someone permanent immediately, or where a temporary arrangement would make it harder to attract top talent.
How to decide
Ask yourself three questions. First, how certain are you about fit from an interview alone? The less certain, the more temp-to-hire helps. Second, how urgent is permanence? If you need someone committed from the first day, lean toward direct placement. Third, how specialized is the role? Niche, credentialed positions usually justify a dedicated direct search, while high-volume roles reward the flexibility of temp-to-hire.
You do not have to choose alone
Many Kansas City employers use both models across different roles, and that is exactly how it should work. At Bridgepoint we help you match the model to the position, so your hiring is as efficient as the people we place. Tell us about the role and we will recommend the approach that fits.
